Even if you have no interest in video games you’ve probably heard about Pokemon GO the viral mobile game unleashing chaos upon the Earth. The newest entry in a pop culture hit that’s been running since the 1990s! The game uses a phone’s video camera (Android or iOS) screen, and geo-location functions to superimpose Pokemon, collectible monsters the user must find, into locations in real time.
It gets even more interactive as there’s a team/competitive element too. And this mix of fantasy and reality—plus the strange locations that the game has deposited Pokemon—has created an instant sensation. All age groups are playing this game!!
But as you can imagine since it uses the real world it’s led to some unbelievable interactions and events; mind-blowing things have happened already and the game’s been out for about a week. Let’s take a look at some of this wild chaos Pokemon Go’s unleashed on the world.
Robbers Use Pokemon Go For Muggings
The game allows users to use a phone’s geo-location function to mark territories with beacons to indicate rare Pokemon and to challenge other users to poke battles in specific locations. So, enterprising criminals in Missouri, Baltimore, California, and Long Island, have used the game to lure unsuspecting players into traps in isolated areas. No one’s been seriously hurt yet, but they have been robbed at gun point.
A Girl Discovers a Dead Body
A 19-year old girl in rural Wyoming discovered the dead body of a drowning victim while hunting for water Pokemon in a local river. A sad and shocking event to have happen for sure. But, it does give us an amazing pitch for a remake of Stand By Me!
Murder Suspect Arrested Thanks to Pokemon Go
This is a little more convoluted and not as direct, but while out and about playing Pokemon Go, two marines spotted a suspicious man aggressively approaching women and children. They called the cops on the guy and he turned out to have an outstanding warrant for murder! Gotta catch them all!!!
Man Crashes Car Into Tree While on the Hunt
We doubt we have to bring up the extreme stupidity of playing a video game on a mobile phone while driving, but at least this is a story that doesn’t end too badly. A dumbass in upstate New York totaled his car by driving it into a tree while catching Pokemon on his cell. He wasn’t seriously hurt and hopefully this is a warning to the world’s dinks.
Pokemon Go Starts a Literal Riot in Australia
A park in Sydney, Australia, has become a popular place to catch Pokemon to the point where over 1000 people have shown up at once to find the digital critters. The chaos and the noise of the crowds has been driving nearby residents crazy, and it finally boiled over into a riot. The locals started throwing eggs and water bombs at the players and it got to the point where the cops had to show up and shut it all down!
That’s all we got so far, but who knows what Pokemon GO will do next to destroy the planet. Tell us your Pokemon stories in the comments and be sure to share this with any fans of the game…think of it as helping them.
