The International Olympics Committee (IOC) is infamously uptight and a little insane when it comes to the Olympics brand. They’ve taken legal action against everyone from the mom-and-pop Olympia Pizza & Pasta Restaurant, to a gay chatline logo full of shirtless men that the IOC said resembled imagery of shirtless Olympic athletes too much.
This year the IOC’s lunacy is the declaration that making GIFS of any Olympic events, be it the actual games or opening/closing ceremonies, is verboten. Rather than just accept this ridiculous decree the ‘Net fought back…through the power of GIFS!!!
Twitter users commented and live tweeted on the opening ceremony by swapping out GIFS of the event with humorous reaction GIFS, here’s some of the best (note you’ll have to hit the play button to see them in their glory):
People seemed to get a kick out of supermodel and Brazilian beauty Giselle Bündchen’s long, long, very slow journey to the stage. We can’t show you the absurd footage but….
The world was pretty psyched that climate change came up in the ceremony, unexpected but appreciated:
The crazy set and the stage made viewers think of a different kind of game…
The psychedelic light show and dance sequence that was one of the cornerstones of the night tripped a lot of people wayyyyyy out.
Moving away from the opening Twitter covered and reacted to the problems of this year’s games using the hashtag #OlympicProblemsIn5Words. And of course, GIFS were one of the best ways to explore and express and explain any of these issues.
People getting sick and getting strange rashes from bizarre mold around the venues was a Tweetable issue:
Plus, the dirty water that’s getting people down…
Some people poked fun at the state of some of the sites where specific games were taking place.
As well as some the games, and some of their unfortunate names, themselves.
And of course the Olympics just ain’t for everyone:
Okay, we cant end this post without at least 1 real GIF of an actual competition, so here you go, it’s the Chinese Team competing in Synchronized Solo Diving!
